Bette Jane Garrison, 92, departed this life on Friday, January 26, 2018. God’s promise to her is, 2 Corinthians 5:1, “For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at age 12, was baptized and fully surrendered her life to the Lord’s control. Her life verse was Psalms 19:14, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Through the power of the Holy Spirit she sought to live that life every day.
Bette was born to the late Rolla Lee Grisham and Dorothy Grisham of St. Louis, MO on January 20, 1926. She attended Mullanphy Elementary School and Adams Middle School where at age 10 she met the one who would be her future husband, Carl E. Garrison. In lieu of high school, she attended a Technical School where she studied secretarial and bookkeeping skills. After finishing her training, she was employed by the City of St. Louis in their accounting department. On a December evening in 1945 she ran in to Carl at a bowling alley. He was home on leave from the Navy and they had not been in contact for 10 years. The romance was rekindled and they were married on February 23, 1946, shortly after he was discharged. Bette and Carl were happily married a few months short of 50 years when he passed away of a heart attack at age 69.
Along with being the mother of three children, Bette served as bookkeeper for Carl’s fuel oil delivery business, Garrison Oil, later Budget Oil. In later years she was the bookkeeper for Stark Printing. The loves of her life were the Lord, her family, her friends (everyone she met) and her church. Bette loved being a homemaker, cooking, and entertaining family and friends. She was always giving and always serving. Her passion in life was to lead others to Christ. She was a faithful witness and Bible teacher for more than 40 years. Many will be with her in heaven because of her loving witness and obedience to Christ’s command to “Go therefore and make disciples…” Matthew 28:19.
Bette is survived by her daughter, Joanne Garrison Byrns, her son, David Garrison; her grandchildren, Scott Byrns, Sarah Byrns Pedro, Janet Alderman Sutton, Amy Alderman Russell, Julie Alderman Widman, Laura Alderman McManaman, Matthew Garrison, Melissa Garrison, Brett Garrison, Jennah Garrison, Madeline Garrison and 13 great grandsons. Her husband, Carl, her daughter, Lisa Alderman, age 40 and her parents, precede her in death.
A public viewing will be held at Pitman Funeral Home, Warrenton, MO, on Thursday, Feb. 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Faith Christian Family Church on the south service road of Hwy 70 in Warrenton, MO, Friday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. A brief graveside service will be at the Warrenton City Cemetery with a reception following at the church.
